When you learn about Search Engine Optimization (SEO), one of the first things you’ll hear about is site authority. Probably right after keywords. And for a good reason. Site authority is one of the major factors in how well you will rank for anything on your entire site. Let’s see how you can boost your site authority.

Internal And External Links

The most basic indicator of authority is the one that was first implemented in the early days of Google. The concept was that as people find helpful and high-quality content and link to it the best will rise to the top.

Things have changed since then. Many safety measures have been put in place so you can’t scam your way to the top by buying links (thank goodness). Site authority is still mostly determined by the quality of natural, high-quality inbound links.

How do you get those?

By sharing content that is interesting and compelling. And by getting the ball rolling by telling your target audience about it. How do you do that, you ask? Social media is a great tool to share your content, which also brings us to my next point.

Social Signals

Once you get started on social media sites, others will start to share your content. That provides inbound links and it sends out “social signals”. As your latest blog post or article gets shared around on social media and liked, your content (and with it your website) gain authority. This will build over time, as will the next item we’ll talk about.

Website Age

The age of your website will also help you as time goes by. The best time to have registered your domain was ten years ago. But, the next best time is today. Get started. Get high-quality content created, and start sharing it with the right audience. Your website authority will grow as time goes on.

Don’t worry or obsess over the age of your site

It is what it is. It’s not like we can turn back time, is it? Building search engine traffic takes time. And not just because of the age factor.

Continue to work on your site and remember that ranking will be easier as time goes by. Not only due to your website’s age and authority but also because you have more content on your site. This content will rank for a variety of keywords. And as you grow your audience they will help you spread the word, creating more social signals and inbound links for you.

This is not an extensive list of ways to boost site authority. There are many factors involved in it besides this. Search engines are purposely vague about what impacts your authority. With that being said, these are the factors that are most in your control and what I have found to be most helpful. Want to learn more?
